I know I have discussed this topic before briefly, but after reading another online dating blog (ItsNotAMatch.com, written by a guy).. I felt the need to address it again. According to my fellow blogger (blog entry here) there are several females out there posting photos of themselves with a fake mustache.
As a single straight female, I don’t often look at profiles of girls. Why would I? But – really? A mustache? (The blogger posted photo examples..)
ItsNotAMatch.com argues, and rightfully so, that this picture is much like the shirtless man photo that we all love to hate so much. Again – as not seeing many girl profiles, I don’t know how big of a thing this mustache thing really is.. but, if it’s anything close to shirtless man photos.. It has to stop!!
What are we trying to say when we post a photo of ourselves with a mustache? Like “B” from the other blog, I could see it maybe being funny the first time or two you see it.. but, obviously it would get old fast. Girls, if you need further encouragement to ditch that photo – what do you think when you see a guys photo with him in a blond wig and a dress? Even if it’s on Halloween, guys that dress like that make me think they may be hiding in the closet. (I hope I don’t get in too much trouble for that one..)
I would argue the same point for planking photos, or owl-ing photos.. but I never understood those anyway.
The following photos (in my opinion) are not worthy of your online dating profile:
Shirtless photos
Females with Mustache photos
Zombie photos
Boner/Dick photos
Underwear photos (yes, even the girls.. as much as the guys will protest)
And.. I am personally not a fan of photos with the ex or a member of the opposite gender, unless that person is quite obviously related. And, if that is a must, cropping them out worse.
What a great blog! Thanks for posting that link. It’s nice to know there are sane men out there, even if too young for me. I did some photo posts a while back — definitely shirtless are out. I also dislike when a man posts more than 4-6 photos. Seems narcisstic. I don’t need to see pics of his travels, his dog, view from his deck, his car, mountains, his kids (this is really a bad idea), his mom (sheesh!), etc. Face pic, full length, biz clothes, casual clothes. That’s enough!

What’s your opinion on photos that people take of themselves – usually with the camera raised above their head – or even worse still, taken in the mirror.

Here’s the thing… I don’t HATE them.. I think we’ve all done it. My only thoughts on this one is there needs to be others as well.
(However – camera raised above the head removes double chin in photos.. just because someone does this does not mean they have one – but cameras are sneaky about adding one in at times.)

Yes, it’s all the camera’s fault! Regarding the moustache thing, it’s bizarre but I don’t find it that surprising. I’ve known three girls who find fake moustaches to be hilarious. Maybe it’s 21st century penis envy.
Personally, I find photoshoot pics (where they’ve gone with a friend and family member for a day of ‘pro’ photos) the most off-putting. As a man I wanna see what you look like doing ‘normal’ things on an average day, with perhaps one slutty zombie nurse picture thrown in to show how wacky and unique you are. Is that too much to ask?

Haha.. that’s funny because a lot of my photos are professional.. (I have non professional ones in there too.)
And – honestly, sometimes it’s the cameras fault for the double chin. Think of it this way – you are probably going to be taller than the girl you date – her holding the camera up to take a photo is going to be the way you are seeing her anyway.

Well in that case I’ll have to take some self-shots of me looking down on the camera.
